ABOUT OUR COACHES

Roger Castle, Jr.

Roger Castle, Jr. has a strong background in playing and coaching, both in Southern California and in England. He began his career as a youth player at Mission Viejo Soccer Club. His High School experience was at RSM High School. Upon graduation, he was accepted into the PACE program at the Dover Football Club in England. While there, he earned his Levels 1 & 2 Coaching Badges.

Roger Jr. is truly a players' coach. He forges strong relationships with his players and is always a advocate for their development and advancement. Based upon his own experiences in youth and Club soccer, he has a good understanding of the challenges facing today's youth soccer players, and can use that to good advantage when coaching.

Roger Jr. lives in Costa Mesa, CA. He still plays in a local league with some of his former club and high school friends.

Roger Castle, Sr.

Born in Southern England, Roger Snr played for some of the best English coaches of his era. As a youth player, he played under Jim Ryan, Academy Director at Manchester United who has produced many great players.

On moving to the States he started coaching and was appointed the Director of Development at the Mission Viejo Soccer Club when the club was a powerhouse. He then accepted a position Head Boys Coach at Mission Viejo High School, building the Diablos into a Nationally ranked school within five years. He took a position as a coach with Irvine Strikers and won State Cup. He started his own club SC Athletic, who entered the SCDSL and then to strengthen the clubs position Nationally he rekindled his old alliance with the Strikers FC..

Roger has a strong network of College and USSF connections to assist players moving forward beyond Club and High School soccer. He also has contacts in his Native England and regularly takes teams to Manchester to compete. He has developed youth players and assisted in placements to Indiana, UCI, UCSB, USF, Sonoma State, Vanguard University, West Point, St. Mary's, and CS Northridge.

Roger is full time Director of Operations/President of Mission Viejo Football Club having retired from the Oil and Gas industry. He resides in Mission Viejo with his wife of 35 years Cecilia, has two children Roger Jr. and Joanna, and has three granddaughters.

Leon Zavalkov

Leon Zavalkov's playing experience began in Odessa, Ukraine where he played youth soccer at the Chernomorets Youth Soccer Academy. He progressed in 1985 to the Chernomorets Premiere Division reserve team, and in 1990 came to the United States where he joined the Hewlett-Lawrence Soccer Club in New York.Leon began coaching club soccer in Orange County for the OC Kings under Thomas Dooley's guidance where he was the Boys U9 Coach 2006-2007 season, and Boys U13 Coach 2007-2008 season. In December of 2008 he moved to Strikers FC-MV, where he continued coaching older boys. He is currently Director of Girls Programs at MVFC.

Additionally, Leon began coaching High School programs starting in 2014 at Mission Viejo High School as the Boys JV and Frosh/Soph coach. In 2017 he was recruited to be the Varsity Coach and Program Director for boys soccer at Laguna Hills High School, where he continues to date.

Leon's love of the game and of coaching is apparent in his coaching style. He brings his international playing and coaching experience to the field and loves to give on-the-spot training and advice. Leon is very straightforward with high expectations for his players, but earns their respect through his dedication and passion.

Jimmy Turner

Jimmy Turner is the skills coach for Mission Viejo Football Club, and Assistant Varsity Coach at Servite High School. He is also formerly an Orange County Blues player, and Midfielder/Defender on the UCI Men's Soccer Team.

Jimmy grew up in Mission Viejo, CA and his playing experience includes youth, Club, High School Soccer, USL and PDL teams. He has played for three local clubs and was team captain at two of those. He won the National Cup with another team, Barcelona FC.

At Mission Viejo High School, Jimmy was honored for both his athletics and academics. He received the Diablo of the Year Award 2007, Athletic Scholar MVHS 2005-2006, and Spirit of the Diablos Award for academics from 2004-2006. He was Team Captain at MVHS from 2006-2008.

Jimmy is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine with a degree in History with an Education minor.

Nikki Dunn

Nikki Dunn is a girls' coach at Mission Viejo Football Club. She is also Varsity Assistant Coach for girls at El Toro High School as well as Women's Assistant Coach at Vanguard University.

Nikki is a Lake Forest native who played at El Toro High School herself. Her playing career includes youth, Club, High School Soccer, College, and WPSL. Her High School Soccer career included 2 years on Varsity including being a captain her senior year.

Nikki went on to play at Vanguard University(VU) for 4 seasons from 2014-2017. In the 2017 season the team went undefeated in conference play and in the tournament. The Vanguard Women’s Soccer Team ended ranking 8th in the nation for the NAIA Coaches’ Poll. Nikki also played for the Strikers WPSL team for their 2017 season.

Colin Smith

Colin Smith is a B02 and B03 Coach as well as Goalkeeper Trainer with Mission Viejo Football Club. He is a former goalkeeper and played 3 years Varsity at Mission Viejo HS, where he was also team Captain and starting Goalkeeper in his senior year. After High School, Colin played at CSU Dominguez Hills NCAA D2 for 2 seasons. During this time, CSUDH was 2015 CCAA regular season Champions and tournament Semi-finalists, and finalists in NCAA D2 Western Region Championship, ranked 5th in the Nation.
